The deepest backlink index in SEO
Purpose-built AI citation measurement
Ahrefs is the reference standard for backlink analysis, with the strongest link index in the industry plus solid keyword research, rank tracking and site auditing. It is built by and for people who do SEO as a full-time job.
Data for AI Search measures whether AI assistants name and cite your business across five engines, and reports the directories, entity gaps and content holes behind the answer. Disclosure: it is built by 10X Search, the same team that publishes this site.
This comparison is more interesting than it first looks, because backlinks and AI citation are genuinely related. Domain authority is one of the strongest observed predictors of whether an assistant cites you. Ahrefs measures the input; Data for AI Search measures the outcome.

“Credit limits bite faster than most people expect, and the jump from Lite to Standard is where serious research actually begins.”
“Free audit is complete rather than a teaser. Paid tiers assume someone will execute the plan; current pricing is a temporary prelaunch rate.”
These stack rather than compete. Ahrefs Lite plus Monitor is about $228/month at prelaunch rates and covers both the authority signals feeding AI citation and the citation outcome itself.
Yes, and this is the strongest argument for running both. Multiple large-scale studies have found domain authority and traffic to be among the most predictive factors in whether an assistant cites a source. Assistants overwhelmingly cite pages that already rank and already have links.
So Ahrefs is not irrelevant to AI visibility — it measures one of the inputs. What it cannot tell you is whether the input converted into the outcome. A site can have a strong link profile and still be absent from the answers that matter, usually because of missing directory presence or an unclear entity rather than weak links.
Data for AI Search measures that outcome directly and, when you are absent, distinguishes between the causes — thin third-party mentions, no knowledge-graph entity, content that is not extractable, or competitors who simply occupy the sources the assistant reaches for.
The honest limitation is that Data for AI Search will frequently tell you to go build authority — at which point you need something like Ahrefs to find the opportunities and track whether the profile is actually improving.
A useful rule of thumb: if the audit says your problem is authority, that is an Ahrefs and outreach problem. If it says your problem is directories, entity clarity or content structure, no backlink tool will find it for you.

Calling a winner here would be dishonest, particularly since we own one of them. Ahrefs is the better tool and the better value for what it does; nothing in the AI visibility category comes close to its link data, and nothing needs to.
The case for adding Data for AI Search is that a strong link profile no longer guarantees you appear in the answer a customer actually reads. Ahrefs will not tell you when that gap opens, because it is not looking at assistant output.
If you are choosing one and your authority is weak, choose Ahrefs — fixing authority helps both problems at once. If your authority is solid and you still cannot work out why assistants skip you, that is precisely the gap the free audit exists to identify, and it costs nothing to check.
