A broad SEO suite against a narrow AI citation tool — and why comparing them on a single score is the wrong question.

Purpose-built AI citation measurement
Semrush is the most comprehensive SEO platform on the market: keyword research, backlink analysis, rank tracking, site audits, competitor intelligence and PPC data in one subscription. It has added AI visibility reporting, but that sits on top of an architecture built for blue-link search.
Data for AI Search does one thing: it measures whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Grok name and cite your business, then reports why they don't. No backlink index, no rank tracking. Disclosure: it is built by 10X Search, the same team that publishes this site.
These are not substitutes. Semrush answers "where do I rank and who links to me?" Data for AI Search answers "do assistants recommend me, and if not, who do they name instead?" A team serious about both questions runs one of each — and if you can only run one, pick the question that is actually costing you business.

“Priced for teams using a large share of the toolset. If you touch three modules, you are paying for twenty.”
“The free audit is a genuine full audit rather than a teaser. Paid tiers only earn their price if someone acts on the findings — and current rates are temporary prelaunch pricing.”
Running both at entry level is roughly $240/month at current prelaunch rates, or $340 once those expire. That is the realistic cost of covering both classic search and AI answers properly — not a cheap stack, but cheaper than losing the category to a competitor you cannot see.
Semrush's AI visibility features are real and improving, but they are a reporting layer on a platform whose core data model is keywords, links and rankings. That framing shapes what you get: mention counts and share-of-voice style metrics.
Data for AI Search starts from the assistant's answer rather than the SERP. It asks whether you are named when someone requests the best option in your category, splits citation from recommendation, and identifies which competitor's pages won the answer.
The practical difference shows up in what you do next. A blended mention score tells you that you have a problem. A competitor citation map plus a directory and entity gap list tells you what to fix first.
The reverse gap is just as real. Data for AI Search cannot tell you that your rankings dropped, that you lost fifty referring domains, or that your site has a crawl budget problem — and all three will eventually hurt your AI visibility too, since assistants lean on the same authority signals.
Neither tool moves the needle on its own. AI citation is driven largely by brand mentions, directory presence and entity clarity — signals that live off your website entirely. Both platforms measure; neither executes.

There is no honest single winner here, and we are not going to manufacture one for a product we own. Semrush is a far broader platform and wins every classic SEO category outright. Data for AI Search wins every AI citation category because that is the only thing it does.
The real question is which gap is costing you more right now. If you cannot see your keyword or backlink position, start with Semrush. If you rank well and still lose the customer to whoever ChatGPT names, that is a different problem and Semrush will not surface it clearly.
The cheapest way to find out is to run the free audit, which costs nothing and requires no card. If it shows you are already well cited, you have your answer and you can spend the budget on Semrush instead.
